What's the "Matter"?

Our 1ST QUARTER science unit is all about MATTER! Students will explore properties of solids & liquids.

​

VOCABULARY:

MATTER: Anything that takes up space.

SOLID: A type of matter that doesn't change shape.

LIQUID: A type of matter that changes shape depending on the container.

GAS: A type of matter that doesn't have a shape.

PROPERTY: A way of describing, an attribute, or a characteristic.

PROPERTIES OF SOLIDS:

color, shape (rolling/stacking), hardness, float/sink (buoyancy), magnetic

 

PROPERTIES OF LIQUIDS:

color, transparency, viscosity, miscibility

"Sounds" Like Fun!

Our 2ND QUARTER science unit revolves around sound: how it is produces, how sounds vary, and how we hear sound.

​

VOCABULARY:

SOUND: A form of energy that helps us hear.

VIBRATE: To move back and forth quickly.

VOLUME: How loud or soft a sound is.

PITCH: How high or low and sound is.

EARDRUM: The part of the ear that vibrates to let us hear sound.

ECHO: When sound waves bounce off something and come back.

SOUND: Creating Instruments!

Day 1: Use Big Universe and Ducksters to research different types of instruments! You will need to create an instrument as a group that can make at least two different pitched sounds! 

"Weather" You Like It Or Not...

Stayin' Alive, Stayin' Alive...

Our 3RD QUARTER science unit revolves around weather. Students will learn about weather tools and what they measure, as well as how and why to study weather patterns.

VOCABULARY:

METEOROLOGIST: Someone who studies the weather.

THERMOMETER: A weather tool that measures temperature (or hot and cold it is)

WIND VANE: A weather tool that measures wind direction (which way the wind is blowing...North, East, South, West)

RAIN GAUGE: A weather tool that measures how much precipitation (rain, snow, etc)

ANEMOMETER: A weather tool that measures wind speed (how fast the wind is blowing)
